Getting ready for an offshore fishing charter adventure? These tips will make sure you make the most of your day on the water.

Offshore sportfishing is a strenuous sport, so you'd be well advised to get a good night's sleep and keep alcohol to a minimum.

On a charter you'll be provided with all the fishing tackle, but you'll want to carry some spare clothing in case you get wet from spray or, hopefully, from landing a big fish! Carry the extra clothes and any personal belongings in a soft-sided tote or duffel bag that is easily stowed.

With a Florida breeze blowing, it can be cool on the water, so take a sweater or light jacket. Many experienced anglers prefer loose-fitting cotton outfits that are not only cool but also allow ample flexibility to fight a fish.

The sun is your enemy, so plan to defend yourself. Many fishing crews wear long-sleeved shirts to protect their arms and long pants cover the legs. Bring along (and use!) a sun lotion with a high SPF, and many fishing supply stores carry brands that will last for the duration of your charter. A hat is equally important, and it should have a safety cord that can be pinned to your shirt so you won't lose the hat to a gust of wind. Fishermen who are susceptible to burning often use zinc oxide on their lips and nose as a final protection.

With all the reflection from the water, a pair of Polaroid sunglasses will not only minimize eye strain, but might just help you pick out the faint shadow of a game fish as he studies your bait.

For footwear, your best choices are the many styles of deck shoes found in marine stores, which combine good looks with a soft sole that provides non-slip footing. Tennis shoes are a good second choice, but stay away from black soles which can leave streaks on that flawless teak deck!

If you know that you're prone to motion sickness, plan to take medication but be aware that over-the-counter anti-seasickness pills often have side effects such as drowsiness and dry mouth. Prescription medications are more effective, and many fishermen have switched to the drugs that are released through the skin from a patch behind the ear. Be aware that any motion medication should enter your system as early as possible, usually 4-8 hours before exposure.

Finally, when you book your charter, be sure to ask about food and drink. Most charters include snacks and soft drinks, but a few suggest you bring your own.
